Laboratory Chemist


Under limited supervision, this position will conduct moderately complex chemical studies, experiments on organic and inorganic compounds and materials, analysis, and tests. Conducts research, analysis, synthesis, and experimentation on substances, for such purposes as product and process development and application, quantitative and qualitative analysis, and improvement of analytical methodologies. Manages a small staff of lab techs which includes scheduling, training, and annual reviews. An understanding of the Pilgrim’s standard operating principles incorporating simplicity, accountability, collaboration and forward thinking is necessary in order to incorporate into all tasks and responsibilities of the position.


  • BS Degree with major studies and coursework in Biology, Microbiology, Food Science or Chemistry required.

  • Minimum 3 years related laboratory experience.

  • Ability to critically examine and follow technical procedures. Preference for excellent problems solving skills .

  • Ability to collect and analyze data using basic statistics, draw conclusions based on facts, and write concise reports.

  • Ability to work in an environment of changing priorities and levels of intensity.

  • Ability to work independently and with limited supervision, as well as with others as a member of a team.

  • Preference to experience presenting and communicating scientific data to audiences.

  • Must have good computer skills (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc). SAP and WinLIMS e xperience a plus.

    • Must be able to communicate with consumers and internal partners in a professional/courteous manner at all times.

    • Prefer a minimum of 2 years experience managing non-exempt (hourly) personnel.


  • Maintains accurate and detailed laboratory data base and records .

  • Maintains and calibrates laboratory equipment.

  • Maintain a clean laboratory environment.

  • Complies with all l aboratory procedures .

  • Receives and logs samples into LIMS and enters and approves data into LIMS.

  • Participates in a n annual pesticide proficiency program , up to 6 times annually .

  • Maintains status as an accredited lab for USDA/FSIS ALP program.

  • Guides and trains laborat ory technicians and associates .

  • Develops formulas, processes, and methods for solution of technical problems.

  • Analyzes samples for the Accredited Lab Program for USDA certified lab pesticide testing, including reporting of results and maintain the accreditation.

  • Review annual hazardous waste audits and maintain all documentation regarding hazardous waste storage.

  • Inventory and maintain supplies needed for pesticide laboratory.

  • Manage day to day receipt, analysis, and reporting of pesticide samples .

  • Prepares standards and specifications for processes, fa cilities, products, and tests .

  • Assist in sample processing of water, feed, and nutritional analyses as needed.

  • Conducts a nnual training for pesticide analysis.

  • Annual review of technicians using the JBS cultural methods and procedures.

  • Orders or assists in ordering lab supplies.

  • Serve as the leader and go-to-person in their work area.

  • Generate reports describing laboratory activities, trends, and expenditures as required.

  • Time management of laboratory technicians.

  • Weekend, Holiday and Overtime work may be required. The chemist is expected to be able to accommodate schedules by working other than a Monday-Friday schedule.

  • Travel to company locations as necessary.
